Composition of Campaign Committee Deepens Osun APC Internal Crisis
There are indications that some chieftains and members of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State are not happy with the appointment of the lawmaker representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Hon. Wole Oke, as the party's campaign Director General for the August 15 gubernatorial election.
Sources within the APC said the members frowned at the choice of Oke who recently defected to the party having contested and won all his elections under the Peoples Democratic Party.
It would be recalled that Oke, a former PDP chieftain was appointed campaign DG by the APC on Tuesday.
Some members of the APC who spoke under conditions of anonymity because of fear of intimidation described the appointment as a slap in the face of genuine leaders of the party who stood by even when the likes of Oke and others were intimidating them while in the opposition.
They stated that Oke's appointment has further divided the party which needs everyone on board in order to try and win the forthcoming election.
They noted that the action only confirms that the party leadership, led by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Gboyega Oyetola, has no trust in the core APC chieftains or does not believe in their capacities to deliver for Oyebamiji.
" To make the matter worse, they also appointed Prince Dotun Babayemi who was until 2024 a PDP member, as a core member of the campaign team. Out of the four DGs, three are former members of the PDP.
" if this is not a slap on the face of our leaders, I don't know what we can call it. Our members are not happy and I think the leadership have to do something about it. Is either Mr Oyetola or the party telling us that they don't trust our leaders enough to win the election or they have driven those who can do the job away from the party and they needed PDP decampees to rescue us," one of the APC members said.
Another member said the campaign team has further divided the party, particularly with the absence of people who are loyalists of former deputy governor of the state, Senator Iyiola Omisore.
"Look at the list released. How many people can you point out from Omisore's camp? The leadership of the party is talking about reconciliation and yet, they keep dividing it further. Will Omisore support our candidate with the way they are treating him?," he said.
The APC members said the party might regret the choice of Oke as the campaign DG, if genuine reconciliation and integration are not done.
"How do the leadership of the party want the core APC chieftains to feel seeing a yesterday decampee running the show in a party they've suffered for. I don't know how they arrived at the choice of Oke as the team leader but if they don't engage in genuine reconciliation, we might as well stay an opposition till 2030", he added.
